Flamingogh – June 16th at the Woods

Crocmode is pleased to announce a new Monday party with more DJ talent than you can shake a record at and an awesomely accessible venue with great sound, a huge outdoor space, AND A TACO TRUCK. Enter Flamingogh. The baby of Victor “Electrichead” and Danny “LongArms” you would expect the party to be electro and house all night but they’ve enlisted the talents of open format superstars CFlo and Kid Chalupa to keep the dancefloor sweaty. Last time I went to this party things got highly weird and also awesome and now it’s going to be even better because it says Croc Mode on the flyer!

Movement 2014 – Festival Recap

As a lover of music and a Michigander I have become keen to the pivotal role of Detroit in the world’s soundscape. Living in Brooklyn now I see the influence of my birthplace on global dance culture, particularly in the work of Seth Troxler, Mike Servito, and the Ghostly camp. This May Paxahau awarded me my first major music festival press pass and I ventured to the Motor City with my dear friend Danny “LongArms.” Movement is my yearly pilgrimage to the birthplace of Techno and is a truly unique festival experience – This video collection of my experiences reflects the eclectic and refined tastes of Detroiters and the festival organizers.

Footnote: we absolutely went to after parties and recognize their importance, however I made a decision to focus on the FESTIVAL for my photo, video, and interviews, and take time to enjoy at Soul Skate and Old Miami. Also not included in the video was an incredible tour Saturday AM with the Detroit Sound Conservancy to the Grande Ballroom, Motown HQ. Find out more about their work and support their efforts to preserve the indigenous sounds of Detroit.  See you in Detroit in 2015!

Tuesbooty with DJ MEL – Party Photos

Tuesdays upstairs at Pianos we throw a party called “Tuesbooty.” It is a truly collaborative effort. I have been lucky to have the multi-talented teammates including Chalupa who leads the effort to book guest talent.

This weeks party featured DJ Mel and she definitely brought the heat! Lots of throwbacks and a dope Reggae set. Looking forward to hearing more from her this Summer.

MH the Verb also is a huge part of the squad! He even grabbed the camera and got some great shots this week.

LongArms provides the soundtrack for us all however. If you haven’t heard the crocmode anthem yet…

We also had our Bandanas to sell and plenty of stickers to give away for the first time at this party – expect to see a lot more of them this Summer!

Boyfriend at Baby’s all Right – Flamingogh at The Woods

Monday nights are awesome in NYC. If you want to go out and see a great show there is never a bad time here and this week was no exception with a wild performance from Boyfriend at Baby’s all Right and a late night dance party to follow up at The Woods.

Boyfriend Live at Baby's All Right

Boyfriend Live at Baby’s All Right

I found out about Boyfriend  through my involvement with SubsceneStyle which is also a dope  blog that you should check out.  Her vibe is shockingly sexual but her music is  really solid and she has a shitload of music videos, all of which are worth a gander. She will inspire you to talk about white female rappers in history. Actually right now is a pretty chill time for white female rappers – Iggy, Kreayshawn and Lil Debbie, etc.  Her performance is intricately crafted like her videos – every song has a concept: She pulls out a wedding dress fabric, or paints her face and sings “Ain’t no White Bitch I’m Cherokee.”

Flamingogh is a Monday night party at The Woods hosted by LongArms and Electrichead.  They have been building some serious momentum and this spot is quickly becoming the Williamsburg move in the beginning of the week.  They have featured CFLO and Kid Chalupa the last few weeks and even had live Bongos this week.  Definitely a zany wild atmosphere and also super fun.

Borbay – Tony Soprano Creation Video (Live Art)

We have visual artist friends here in NYC in addition to our steady stream of musical talents and one of the most original, inspiring, and successful is Jason Borbay.

In this making of video you can see the artistic process behind his work, which I was first introduced to at Boston University where his portrait of Lil Wayne blew my mind. His subject is Tony Soprano – the depressed mob boss portrayed in the 90s and early naughts to near-perfection by the late James Gandolfini.

The music is supplied by MH the Verb and features a verse from Kuf Knotz. Take a bite outta that! #CHOMP

Movement Day 3 Pics – Moon Boots + Ryan Hemsworth + Pete Tong + Tiga

The freaks come out at night – and also during the day for Movement festival which went down in Detroit Memorial Day weekend.

More than 100,000 attended the massive ode to electronic music and for LongArms and myself it has become a yearly tradition.

We are still busy chopping video up but are excited to release the final package of photos today – Movement Day 3.

The day was packed with talent starting with a housey, bouncey, vocal heavy set from Moon Boots at 2pm.  We thought he didn’t play originals but actually there were a few they were just unreleased joints! After his set we got to talk with him about his move to Brooklyn, how Chicago still influences his sound, and why he didn’t go “tech” for his movement set.

Skream played on the Beatport stage at 4:30 and went in for one of the most magical  hours of the festival.  It seemed like his entire set was a blend of two tracks, where one was a stripped down break that he would go to to create builds and presage drops.  I was expecting dubstep or some 2-steppy grimey bassliney stuff but didn’t get it rather the set was made up of house and techno.  I had heard stories about his somewhat partying but this appearance was all about the music.

Carl Craig is from Detroit but he sounds like he was born in Berlin. Escort was a top live band at the festival with only Amp Fiddler in contention #Cocaine.

Pete Tong owned the Beatport stage on day 3. His stage presence was enormous. The songs were unfamiliar and yet huge. This was a big name that did not disappoint.

Movement – Day 2 Pics – Andres, Seth Troxler, Jimmy Edgar, Heathered Pearls, DJ Psycho + Martinez Brothers

Day 2 in Detroit was a huge success in our planned and unplanned activities.

Image

We woke up early after a super-late and totally magical night at Soul Skate to catch a beautiful and somewhat heavy set from Heathered Pearls on the Beatport stage.  Heathered Pearls is the project of Jakub Alexander – he’s on ghostly international and lives in Brooklyn so we share some Ann Arbor–>NYC background.  After his set we got to talk about his musical aesthetic and the INTERVIEW will be posted this weekend.

Image

Sunday was apparently the day for the REAL DJs to come out and work the turntables because DJ Psycho and Andres were both absolutely unreal on the cuts and beat juggling.  Psycho played a 100% vinyl set on three turntables that incorporated 80s 90s and Detroit classics with marvelous effect. He didn’t use the mic – simply used his facial expressions and knowledge of music to pump up the audience.  He was one of the only dudes I saw at the festival REALLY blending records (other than Skream but that’s a story for day 3).  How about I got interviews with BOTH of these cats and they will be up soon – also.   The third DJ after my own heart on Sunday was Nightwave.  I had no idea who she before the festival but chilling in VIP I heard some big joints with vocals and vocals are not always the easiest thing to find at Movement so I went down and listened for a while. She was REALLY going in. It took a while for Amp Fiddler to get set up so she got to run a few extra joints and one of them was UGKs International Players Anthem (WITH THE LONG ASS INTRO). I was impressed.

DEMF – Tech Fest – Movement: Whatever the name this Festival is sweet beyond smells.

This is the electronic music festival that refuses to book the big-draw artists, and allowing an entire stage for local music.

This year had a stacked lineup and Danny “LongArms” and I took the festival by storm.

Tuesbooty Pics up Now! w/ Topshelf Tyson, Kid Chalupa and B-Tips

Image

Pianos is too much fun for real.  This week started a little slow but by midnight the bar was crushed as usual and the dancefloor was hot and sweaty.  This really drunk fella was getting eyeballs from security but he actually turned the party up a notch! Best of all Topshelf Tyson laced us with a set that won’t be forgotten – great mix of hood classics and certified bangers.
